Badminton is an energetic game that has been a great favorite for many years. Since its inclusion in the Summer Olympic Games of 1992, it's also recognized and appreciated as a highly competitive sport. While physically challenging by nature, it's also a game that all ages and skill levels can truly enjoy. The lightweight action of the shuttlecock also makes it an engaging sport based on wind direction and the whims of its unique shape.
While it's often considered a leisure activity, some of the statistics may surprise you. At top speed, plastic shuttlecocks can track at more than 160 miles per hour. Their feathered counterparts are even more impressive with a velocity exceeding 200 miles per hour. Players also get their exercise, completing the equivalent of at least one mile during the course of a match.
Many centuries ago, this sport was played by a different name, believed to be "battledore and shuttlecock." A battledore was probably the first racket design and soon popularized among children across Europe. Nobility took notice, especially the Duke of Beauford, who declared it an adult's game at his estate, Badminton House.
Today's gear is highly specialized and includes the basics: a racket, a shuttlecock and a net setup. While regulation play is quite different from a casual get-together of family or friends, the basic rules apply: keep the shuttlecock in play and don't let it touch the ground. At the Badminton Stop, we're pleased to offer equipment for all playing levels.
Rackets are typically lightweight and incorporate more slender framing as compared to tennis. For beginning and casual players, steel handles and aluminum or steel heads are excellent choices. Advanced players who enjoy strong competition often select graphite or carbon construction, but these are also popular with less-skilled players.
The shuttlecock is also called a "birdie" or "shuttle." They're manufactured as "plastics" or as "feathers." Many players enjoy the more precise control of the feathered versions, but they are often not quite as economical as plastic. In addition, their life is somewhat limited by the nature of their composition; however, tournament grades will certainly provide plenty of value for the experience. Goose and duck feathers are commonly incorporated into the shuttle design preferred by competitive players. They produce faster speeds into the strike, then slow as they begin the descent. Plastic versions remain highly requested for weekend tourneys and family outings or back yard play. You'll find them in classic whites, yellows and bright colors for even more fun.
Nets on occasion may need replacement, but they are also budget priced. It's wise to keep a backup on hand, along with a good supply of birdies. They're easy to attach and just as quick to pack up at the end of a day at the beach. Weather resistant design makes them rugged, but they will last longer if you store them when not in use or if high winds are expected.
To save shopping and selection time, we have also included badminton sets. These are designed at several different recreational and competition levels for convenience. Everything is included: poles, net, rackets for four players and birdies. Sets also include tiedowns and stakes to secure the poles. Net instructions are easy to understand and they cover the rules and regulations, too. Durable carrying cases make these an outstanding investment and will keep gear together for travel or at home.
Whether you're just starting out, looking for a great gift or are upgrading or replacing your badminton gear, we think you'll find browsing this selection easy. Ordering is also simple and seamless for added convenience.
